Love your museum weekend at the Roman Baths and Regally Framed at the Fashion Museum

Over the Royal Wedding Bank Holiday weekend, Bath & North East Somerset Council’s museums are hosting a number of fun activities everyone.

The Roman Baths is hosting a ‘Love your museum weekend’ as part of its campaign to gain the 2011 Art Fund Prize, the most prestigious award in the museum world. The Roman Baths are already on the long list which was announced in February.

The purpose of The Art Fund Prize is to recognise and stimulate originality and excellence in museums and galleries in the UK, and increase public appreciation and enjoyment of all they have to offer. A single award of £100,000 is presented to a museum or gallery whose entry, in the opinion of the judges, best meets the Prize criteria. For this special weekend activities include the chance to find out if you are Roman Citizen or a Barbarian. Create a laurel wreath, meet Roman characters at the Roman Baths and also make a majestic picture frame at the Fashion Museum.

New Mini Recycling Centre – The Parade, High Street, Twerton

Somer Housing are planning to arrange for B&NES to install a Mini Recycling Centre (MRC), for residents living in the flats at The Parade. Wheelie bins will be provided in a fixed frame, in the car park area next to the garages.

The current situation involves the B&NES recycling contractor, May Gurney, collecting the individual recycling boxes from outside of the flats. 

 

Following Health & Safety issues with the collection crews travelling down the stairs with full recycling boxes, Somer now feel it would be more beneficial to provide residents at The Parade with a Mini Recycling Centre.

This would involve residents taking their recycling down to this area and depositing this in the appropriate recycling bin. There would no longer be a recycling box collection or a blue bag collection for cardboard, meaning residents would not have to store recycling in their flats until collection day.

We have expressed some concern to Somer about the security of the recycling area and are insisting that the bins are secured in this area. 

Somer are writing to all residents this week and if supported they will arrange installation by the end of June.

Bath City Farm Fun Day

We both spent time at Bath City Farm yesterday at the Children's Fun Day. It was good to see that nearly 200 people turned up and had a wonderful time.

The event organised by Bath area Play Project and the Play rangers was a great success which every one seemed to enjoy.

Children were also able to visit the animals at the farm and partake in a free Barbecue thanks to donations by local traders.

It has to be many thanks to the volunteers that give up their time to make such an event possible.

It is quite a while ago that we reported these and have told Somer that we are unhappy with their response.

Somer have recently let the property to a new tenant but no action was taken by Somer to deal with the hedge, We have now asked that they urgently deal with this problem.

Mess left after collection Day

We have asked that the council return to Highland Road and clear up the mess that was left after the recycling team had visited yesterday.

The mess that was left behind is not acceptable in any way and we have asked that the service is monitored.

Furniture dumped in Childrens play ground

We have asked the council to remove the furniture that was dumped in the children's play ground at Innox Park.

We are concerned that older youths will set this alight as they have in recent years.

If you know who dumped these please let us know.

Wedgewood Road Bus Stop

A Water leak occurred near this bus stop nearly 4 weeks ago the repair was made but the ground has not be reinstated properly nor the signs removed.

We have asked the council to ensure that this area is reinstated As soon as possible.

Mini Play Day & Easter Egg Hunt

This Wednesday there will be a Mini Play day and Easter Egg Hunt held at Bath City farm from 12noon till 3pm

This event is organised by the Play Rangers in the area.

Why not give the kids a break and take them to the City Farm this Wednesday at Kelston View in Twerton.

Turtle Toy Library

The Twerton Ultimate Radical Toy Lending Experience is open to any family in B&NES with children under 16 years of age. It is also open to groups which work with children e.g. nurseries, pre-schools and out of school clubs. We are also linked with the Bath Childminding Network who use the Library and the Hut twice a month to meet.

Turtle Toy Library at the Hut- Opening Dates 2010/2011
Turtle Toy Library will be open at The Hut every other Saturday of each month from 10am – 12 noon. Sessions will take place on the following dates:

The Childminding Network meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month and people may choose to return toys and equipment on those days if it is easier.

The Toy Library has a Development Worker - Val Rowlands who monitors toy usage, maintains toys and equipment and where parents want suggestions for child development or other reasons, she is able to suggest items that may be suitable. The toy library has a large range of toys and equipment which is all catalogued and numbered with a system of borrowing like in a book library.

Members joining TURTLE, are issued with a membership card and then can borrow 2 toys per child for up to a month.

There are baby toys, pre-school toys, dressing up clothes, pop up tents, board games, construction sets including lego, k’nex, a go-kart, camping equipment, skateboard ramps, musical instruments, story bags and even a karaoke machine.

Between Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th April 2011, unknown person(s) removed lead from the porch roofs of two properties.

Long Valley Road, Bath.

Between 0400 and 0430 hours on Friday 15th April 2011, unknown person(s) damaged the window of a property.

Eleanor Close, Bath.

At approximately 1800 hours on Friday 15th April 2011, unknown person(s) smashed a number of panes of glass in a greenhouse.

West Close, Bath.

At approximately 2230 hours on Sunday 17th April 2011, unknown person(s) smashed the window of a motor vehicle and removed items from within.

Lidl Latest

The latest update in the Saga about the probability of Lidl taking over the former Herman Miller Site.

The Council tell us that the planning permission will be granted once the legal agreements for improvements to such items as highway improvements are signed by the developer.

This has been going on for nearly four years now and I am looking forward to seeing this site cleared up and a new supermarket and associated shops on site.

Many local people have been telling us that they would welcome a Lidl on this site and we hope that this time it will become a reality.

Please do not Park on the Path

Why do some people always think that the law does not apply to them and then carry on regardless.

This car has been constantly been seen parking on the path all evening and at weekends at the end of the Parade Twerton High Street.

It is not that there is not a parking space in sight as there are plenty available, we have reported this vehicle to the Police and asked that they deal with the individual.

We have to constantly have the paving slabs replaced in this part of the High Street due to vehicles driving on them, so hopefully the message will get out.

Bath City Farm put on a special day that many children as well as Adults seemed to enjoy. The Launch of the grow it cook it share it day was made all the more special by the sight of Shire Horses pulling an old fashioned plough on new allotment areas that are being created.

The whole farm area has been spruced up with new fences and is now quite spectacular.

The price of scrap metal has continued to rise and because of this we are experiencing a significant rise in the number of reported crimes of metal theft, particularly lead and copper.

Where possible please consider any metals on your property and take any measures available to you to prevent them being stolen.  Prevention measures could include better perimeter security, removing easy access and any climbing aids to roofs, securing ladders away and increasing visibility to the area.  There are alternatives to lead that can be used with the correct planning permission if a listed building and metals can be property marked with forensic security marking solutions.

Pedestrian Crossing Newton Road

We have received the report concerning the petition for a pedestrian crossing on Newton Road. We are disappointed that the Conservative executive member has decided not to install a crossing at this moment in time but we are encouraged that some action is being taken.

The report is below.

The reduction in accident statistics on Newton Road immediately surrounding the school suggests the Safer Routes to School funded engineering has been successful in reducing speeds, raising awareness of children crossing and therefore reducing child accidents in the immediate vicinity of the school. There is, however, a continuing level of concern about crossing this road, both during the school journey and in use by the wider community where this road is regularly crossed.

 

It is proposed that further investigation into the dangers encountered by school children crossing in this location be undertaken, led by an update in the school travel plan. The Safer Routes to School officer (Jessica Fox-Taylor) has provided online surveys links to engage with pupils, parents, staff, governors and residents local to the school. The Safer Routes to School officer will continue to liase with the school on their progress in updating the travel plan, and ensure any emerging need for a controlled pedestrian crossing in this location is reflected in the list of engineering schemes to be brought forward for future Safer Routes to School capital funding.

Unfortunately the candidate selected for the School Crossing Patrol post has decided not to take up the offer of the job; however Bath and North East Somerset Council will continue to recruit for this post.

New Bus Shelter for High Street

We have made an additional request for a new bus shelter and bus stop to be installed at the Parade Twerton High Street.

Many residents have complained that they get wet when waiting for a bus to go to other parts of Twerton & the Whiteway estate. The new shelter and seat will help many people.

Innox Park

We have asked the Police to increase their patrols in the Innox Park area after receiving reports of youths setting fires in the hedges behind Highland Road.

Last year we had some nasty fires there and we do not want a repeat of them.

We have again asked for the mess in Highland Road to be cleared up.

The Picture clearly shows the litter that is all over the area and we feel that the council needs to take some action to ensure that the area stays clean.

Litter Bin High Street

We have asked for the litter bin in Twerton High Street outside of the former Marjorie Whimpster Home in Twerton High Street to be replaced as soon as possible.

The bin although it looks serviceable it is broken at its base and needs to be replaced.

Don Foster to open the community project at the RNID

Don Foster MP for Bath will open a community project at the RNID on 20th April 2011 at 2pm. The project involves creating a sensory experience through woodland for the residents and service users of the RNID.  The project is part of the Prince's Trust Team programme run by City of Bristol College. There will be a photo opportunity for all press at the opening ceremony which will be held at RNID Poolemead, Watery Lane, Twerton, Bath BA2 1RN.

The programme run at RNID is a 12 week personal development programme for 16-25 year olds that encourages and enables them to improve their motivation, confidence and employability skills. Currently, over 70% of participants move from being long term unemployed, often with low skills and self esteem, into full time education, training or employment.

Commenting Don Foster said, “This is a fantastic project that depends on the hard work of the staff, volunteers but also the students. This project is all about drawing out the maximum potential in people. I fully support it and wish everyone at the RNID the best for the future”.

New Road Marking asked for

We have asked the council to introduce former road makings to the rear of Cleeve Cameley & Pennard Green after a few very close accidents.

The Pictures shows one such area where formal road markings would help.

Lane Cleaned up

The lane that leads from Longhay Close to the Hollow has been cleaned up after we complained about its condition.

The Picture Shows very clearly how bad a state the council had let the lane get into before we got it cleared up.

Election nominations have been validated by the Returning Officer and there are nine candidates standing in Twerton Ward at the election on Thursday, May 5th.

Cllr Tim Ball and Cllr Gerry Curran are your Liberal Democrat candidates for the two places available.

  Tim and Gerry are both committed to listening to, and representing the residents and community of Twerton Ward that includes the lower whiteway area for the next four years.

New Bollards in Place

New bollards have been installed on many areas around the greens in Twerton.

These will benefit many of the residents in the area as cars will not be allowed on the grassed areas in Cameley Green Cleeve Green & Pennard Green as children will again be allowed to play safely.
