unauthorised structure near to carrs wood at Walwyn Close

We have asked that the unauthorised structure near to carrs wood at Walwyn Close is removed as soon as possible. The structure is unstable and a potential fire hazard. We are aware that it was probably put together as a bit of fun but it is dangerous and a hazard.

Bath and North East Somerset Polling Station review

Bath and North East Somerset Council are currently reviewing the current locations of the polling stations across the area. More details of this review can be found here.

Also as part of this review, we have asked for the ward name of Twerton to be changed to reflect the area it now covers and therefore have asked for the new name to be Twerton and Whiteway ward.  This is something that several residents asked us to do a couple of years ago.  This change can only happen as part of this type of full legal review and will only happy if local residents are also in agreement.

We are therefore asking residents to submit their comments of support to the local Council, representations from the ward community can be submitted as part of the review, either by email at elections@bathnes.gov.uk or by writing to Electoral Services, Bath & North East Somerset Council, Guildhall, High Street, Bath, BA1 5AW.

The deadline for comments is Monday, 20th November 2023.

Local Elections - Thursday 4 May 2023

Local community champions Tim Ball and Sarah Moore have been selected to stand for Twerton in the Local Election on May 4th. Use both your votes for a strong local Lib Dem team. We can only continue the improvements in B&NES if we elect two local Lib Dems here.

TIM BALL: Tim has been serving as a voice for Twerton and Whiteway on the council since 1991. As councillor, he has challenged the council on bettering their policies on a vast number of issues. For instance, Tim was able to persuade the council to introduce improved housing standards and restrictions on Student Accommodation blocks and convince the council to update its autism policies. Tim cares about the well being of the youth and education policy, and pursued funding for the refitting of windows at Twerton Infant School. Tim is married to Sharon; together, they have five children and twelve grandchildren.

SARAH MOORE: Sarah has been serving as a voice for Twerton and Whiteway on the Council since 2019. She is a lifelong resident of Bath, and has called Twerton home for more than twenty five years. An active member of the community, Sarah has been involved in numerous campaigns, such as resurfacing of damaged roads and making our pavements safer. If re-elected, Sarah would like to focus on ensuring more family homes for local residents and more improvements across Twerton and Whiteway that benefit the residents. Sarah is married, with two children, and works as a Revenues Invoicing Coordinator for a computer software company where she has been for almost thirty five years.

Please remember, you will need photo ID if you are voting in person or you can apply for a postal vote. Full details can be found here.

Election changes - Photo ID Required

Changes in national legislation mean that for the first time voters will need to show photographic ID when they go to the polling station to vote in the local elections.

A passport, photocard driving licence, Blue Badge, Older Person’s Bus Pass or a Disabled Person’s Bus Pass are some of the documents that will be accepted as proof of identity before voters will be issued with a ballot paper at the polling station. Voters will also need to be on the electoral register.

The need for photo ID is a new requirement, introduced by the UK Government’s Elections Act, which comes into effect from 4 May 2023.

The full list of acceptable photo ID is available on the Electoral Commission’s website. An acceptable form of photo ID that is out of date can still be used if the name is the same as on the electoral register and the photo is recognisably you.

Voters who don’t have an acceptable form of photo ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate online or by completing a paper form. They can also apply for the certificate in person at the Guildhall in Bath.

To apply for the certificate, residents will need to provide a passport-style photo, full name, date of birth, the address at which they are registered to vote and their National Insurance number. If applying at the Guildhall, staff will be able to take a photograph to accompany their application.

Will Godfrey, chief executive of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “Although the local elections are not until May, we are encouraging residents who want to vote to make sure their name is on the electoral register and that they have an accepted form of photo ID. If you’re not sure whether you are registered to vote you can contact the council to check.”

You can check if you are on the electoral register by calling 01225 477333 or emailing elections@bathnes.gov.uk. The deadline to register to vote for the May elections is Monday 17 April. Residents can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate at the same time as registering to vote.

The deadline to apply for a certificate for the May election is 5pm, Tuesday 25 April.

The requirement to show photo ID only applies to people voting in person at a polling station. If you vote by post, you will not need to provide photo ID.

More information is available on the council website.

Preventing Crime and Protecting Communities - Consultation

People are being asked for their views on a three-year plan to help prevent crime and protect communities across Bath and North East Somerset.

The Joint Community Safety Plan 2022- 2025 sets out how the council and its partners the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner and Avon and Somerset Police will work together to build strong, resilient communities.

Using local data held on crime in B&NES the draft plan addresses joint working to tackle key issues including crime, disorder, anti-social behaviour, domestic abuse, preventing people from being drawn into terrorism, and working in partnership to combat serious organised crime and to reduce serious violent crime.

The draft plan reflects some of the priorities and concerns raised by local people including:

  • Continue to identify opportunities for longer-term funding to reduce domestic abuse and improve outcomes for survivors
  • Support and enable the reporting of, discovery of, and response to, incidents of modern slavery and exploitation.
  • Meet our Prevent duties and help other partners to do so, including raising awareness of reporting method for online extremist material working with community groups to raise awareness of radicalisation and in particular the role of social media
  • Ensure the Police and other partners agencies work closely with Area Forums on key community safety issues
  • Continued focus on river safety campaigns with partners and students
  • Work with the Student Community Partnership and with educational establishments to promote safety, e.g., awareness of drink spiking.
  • Work alongside partners to promote safety on our streets particularly in response to national campaigns regarding women’s safety in public areas.
  • Work on hate crime through the Hate Crime Partnership and encourage families and friends to report concerns.

The draft plan also sets out how the council aims to support delivery of the Avon & Somerset Crime Plan in Bath and North East Somerset. For the council, this covers wide-ranging responsibilities, including delivery of those services that help to create healthier communities and address the underlying causes of crime, but also respond to concerns and broader issues that contribute to making people feel unsafe in their communities such as antisocial behaviour, environmental crime, fly-tipping and rogue trading.

Councillor Dine Romero, cabinet member for Children, Young People and Communities, said: “Together with Avon and Somerset Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) we have a shared aim which is to take every opportunity to protect the public and promote safer communities. I welcome this draft plan which reflects our shared priorities and sets out how we will protect the most vulnerable people from harm.”

Mark Shelford, PCC for Avon and Somerset, said: “A key theme of my Police and Crime Plan, and my first priority for the people of Avon and Somerset, is preventing crime.

“As your PCC, I am the voice of local people in policing so I regularly visit people in Bath and North East Somerset, where I’m also a resident, and talk to individuals, community groups, business owners and local councillors about the policing issues that matter. It’s important that I understand your concerns and priorities to ensure your local police are delivering an effective and efficient service.

“However, preventing crime is something we have to do in partnership with other agencies and our communities to ensure they are strong and resilient. This local plan has been created to focus on the matters where we can work in partnership to make a difference and I would encourage everyone to do the survey and give us your thoughts and feedback.”

The plan will be taken to the Children, Adults, Health and Wellbeing Policy Development and Scrutiny Panel on 17th of January, Cabinet on the 9th of March and full Council on the 16th of March for adoption. To read the draft plan and take part in the consultation, please click here. The consultation closes at 6pm on February 14.

Lower Bristol Road - National Grid works - UPDATE

THESE WORKS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED AND WILL BE RESCHEDULED.

We have been notified of upcoming utility works that are likely to cause congestion in Bath from Saturday 11th to Friday 17th February (school half term), that we want to make you aware of.

National Grid need to provide a new high voltage cable for the new development on the former Dick Lovett car showroom site on Lower Bristol Road.

The works involve an excavation across Lower Bristol Road, and requires the permanent signals at the junction with Windsor Bridge Road to be turned off and replaced with temporary 4 way signals. This is what we expect will cause delays, and due to the temporary pedestrian crossings require an all-red stage in the temporary signals.

Advanced warning signs will be in place before the works commence, and variable messaging signs will inform motorists of any delays. Emergency services and bus operators will also be informed.

Poolemead Road resurfacing

Following several years of chasing, we are pleased to confirm we have now received confirmation that the funding has been secured to resurface the remaining section of Poolemead Road from its junction with Sheridan Road up to the junction with Whiteway Road.

We will confirm as soon as the actual commencement date has been agreed.

We have also had requests for double yellow lines to be put in on the bend at the top of Poolemead Road near the Junction with Sheridan Road and these have also been agreed to go into the next TRO process.

Poolemead Road improvements

Poolemead Road will be closed from the junction with Sheridan Road to just below the Centurian pub from 23rd January 2023 for approximately 2 weeks.

This is to allow long awaited improvements to be put in place to make safer crossing points for everyone but especially to the school and nursery.

These changes should slow the traffic, making it safer and easier for pedestrians to get across the road.

Unfortunately we are unable to arrange for the road resurfacing to take place at the same time, however, we are pushing to get the remainder of Poolemead Road resurfaced.

We will provide an update on bus services nearer the start date.
