Investigations into Pavement Issues in Twerton and Whiteway

A Report on Pavement Concerns and Proposed Solutions

We are currently addressing various issues with the pavements in the areas of Twerton and Whiteway. Following the successful installation of dropped kerbs on Twerton High Street, our focus has shifted to the paving slabs, which are visibly cracked and broken. In response to this, we have requested an investigation into alternative surface types to ensure the durability and safety of the pavements.

Additionally, at Redland Park, the red-bricked paving has started to sink significantly, rendering it unfit for purpose. This deterioration has necessitated a request for an evaluation of different paving materials that may better withstand the conditions and provide a safer and more stable surface.

Our goal is to enhance the infrastructure in these areas by employing more resilient and effective paving solutions, ensuring the safety and comfort of all pedestrians.

Planned Number 5 Bus Route changes

Last year a number of residents across Twerton raised concerns with us about buses unable to pass in both directions on a number of the narrower roads. We met with Firstbus and even went on a ride around the area to highlight these issues. Following our communications, Firstbus carried out a review and consultation and have now confirmed the changes they are proposing for the Number 5 route.

FirstBus are looking to implement these changes from 29th April 2018 on a trial basis, with a view to either reverting back to the old route or adopting the new route on a permanent basis at the end of July 2018.

The new route will see the bus go along Newton Road to the end, turn up Pennyquick, then turn into the Hollow by Haycombe Cemetary and up into Haycombe Drive by the Beehive Surgery, where it will pick up the previous route back into town.  The only additional alteration to this is the bus will not turn into Kelston View from Haycombe Drive, but will continue around Haycombe Drive into Whiteway Circle and then down North Way to join the rest of the route down through Twerton.

A number of issues were raised during the consultation and FirstBus have taken all of these into consideration before proposing this route and will be closely monitoring the Pennyquick area of the route specifically.

Waste & Recycling Alterations

This Monday, 6th November, is the start of the new Waste & Recycling changes brought in by the Council.

Please be aware your collection day is likely to have changed.  Make sure you read the leaflet that was delivered with your bin/bag as this contains important information about your collection.

The recycling will still be collected EVERY week, however, the day for this is likely to have changed, a lot of Twerton has been altered to now be collected on a FRIDAY not a Tuesday.

Your rubbish collection will be collected fortnightly and your garden waste is staying as fortnightly.  There is a calendar shown on the leaflet that you will have received.  This shows the weeks are split into green week and black week.  Green week will be the week your garden waste will be collected and black week is when your non-recyclable household rubbish will be collected.

After checking this information, we discovered that with this combination of changes there is going to be a 17 day wait for the first non-recyclable household rubbish collection for a number of households in the Twerton area.  We have been told by a Senior Waste Officer at the council, to accommodate this change they will be accepting additional black waste sacks put along side your new container for the first couple of collections.

Your waste and recycling  bins/boxes/bags should be put outside your property by 7am on the day of collection, but should not be put out before 8pm the night before.  The council have said they may impose a £60 fine for anyone that is not complying with the guidelines they have provided within their leaflet, and no containers should obstruct footpaths.

If you have any questions about this please do get in touch with either the waste services team or us.

Safer Roads - Wedgwood Road

Continuing on our Safer Roads campaign, we are pleased to confirm that the signs we had requested are now being put up to make our residential roads safer for everyone.

New road sign on Wedgewood Road

We requested some of our roads had HGV restrictions to ensure the safety of children walking to school, cyclists and all other pedestrians.

Our residential roads are not capable of sustaining the level of heavy vehicles that are currently using them and this will hopefully also help to ensure the road surfaces we do manage to get repaired and replaced last longer.

Twerton Residents Survey

Councillor Tim Ball and local campaigner Sarah Moore have been out talking to residents about what affects them in the area, and have been asking for our annual survey to be completed to help us provide more assistance where required.

We have decided that it may be easier for some residents to complete this on-line and as such, we have created an electronic version that can be accessed here.

We would like as much feedback from residents as possible to ensure your views are taken into consideration when various items that would affect you are discussed at council meetings.

Please can you take the time to either complete the on-line version or the paper version that will come through your door.

If you have any questions, please contact us.

Childrens Centres

Residents have been asking about the Council debate on Children's Centres and what is happening in the communities.

The Bath Chronicle ran a fairly accurate story on what happened on the night and Links are available here for that article.

A further article based on the Chronicle story including a few more facts and the motions moved by all three political parties is on Tim Ball's personal web site.
