Christmas and New Year rubbish and recycling collections

Every household has been sent a leaflet advising them of changes to the recycling and rubbish collection dates and highlighting the outstanding 60% recycling rate achieved across the area, which has helped save 51,000 tonnes of waste – enough to pack Bath Abbey to its vaulted ceiling around 14 times. Christmas Waste/Recycling Dates

Below are the dates that waste and recycling will be collected over the Christmas period

Christmas trees can be collected from January 18 after garden waste collections resume, taken to a Recycling Centre or collected by Dorothy House. The charity has a dedicated website for people who live in BA1, BA2, BA3 and BS31 postcodes to arrange for their Christmas tree to be collected by volunteers. Keynsham is a new collection area added for 2021.
 

Redland Park and Longvalley Road

 

We have asked the council to use more common sense with regards to the collection of black bag refuse that has been left and cannot be attributed to one particular property.

The current practice has been to label a bag and leave it. 

We have pointed out this practice is causing a litter problem as the black bags become split and litter is then spread across the area. 

We hope they will listen and collect this waste.

Rubbish and Recycling

Part of the issue with litter on our streets is the incorrect presentation of rubbish and recycling for collection.

In Twerton and Whiteway we have rubbish collected every fortnight on a Friday and recycling is collected every week on a Friday.

Every household across the area should have either a black bin or black reusable rubbish sack in which to put their household waste, we would encourage as many households as possible to recycle their waste as this reduces the amount of rubbish to be put into these containers and therefore means extra black bags are less likely to be put out.

The flats across the area have a slightly different storage solution, a number of these have dedicated large bins in bin stores which should only be used for household waste and not for anything else like broken appliances etc.

Recycling containers are not restricted, every household is entitled to green boxes, blue sack (for cardboard) and black food containers.  

The food waste containers come in 2 sizes a small caddy for internal use and a larger one that you can then put the bags from the internal caddy into.  Food waste can be put out in plastic bags, or you can get caddy bags from the Council.

The green boxes are not restricted to a single box per household, if you require more receptacles for your recycling please do get in touch with Council connect or you can order additional boxes here, This link also shows exactly what can be recycled and when your collection days are.

The Council also offers a garden waste recycling service, you can either purchase single use green waste bags or you can pay an annual charge and use a wheelie bin to put you green waste out every fortnight.

Winter waste and recycling

Recycling and rubbish collection dates across Bath and North East Somerset will be revised over Christmas and New Year.

There will be no collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day.

Look out for the flyer advising of the revised collection dates which will be delivered to residents in the post at the beginning of December.

With more rubbish thrown away over the festive period than at any other time of year, residents are being urged to recycle as much waste as possible.

Councillor David Wood, joint cabinet member for Climate Emergency and Neighbourhood Services, said: “Across the country the amount of waste generated over Christmas increases by almost a third. That’s a lot of extra rubbish, but if we think before we buy, we can reduce the amount of waste we create. Please think twice before buying cards with environmentally damaging glitter, and shiny wrapping paper which can’t be recycled as it contains plastic.

“When Christmas shopping choose environmentally friendly presents such as appliances that use renewable energy like a wind-up radio or torch, dynamo bicycle lights or a solar powered calculator. If you do need batteries opt for rechargeable ones and send recycled Christmas cards or e-cards.

“Once the presents have been unwrapped and the turkey eaten, inevitably there will be lots of rubbish and waste. It’s really important residents recycle as much as they can to avoid waste going to landfill – please use your food waste bin, green box and blue bag recycling collections and if you plan to make a New Year’s resolution, how about a pledge to recycle more?”

The majority of Christmas waste can be recycled from kerbside collections:

Food waste bin

• All food waste, including meat and bones - especially turkey bones & sprout peelings!

Recycling Boxes

• Wrapping paper (White backed wrapping paper. No glitter or foil).
• Tins and cans
• Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
• Glass bottles and jars (mincemeat jars)
• Foil (mince pie cases)
• Textiles – such as Christmas jumpers should be placed in a carrier bag in the box
• Small electricals (broken fairy lights)
• Batteries, mobile phones, printer cartridges, spectacles, engine oil and car batteries

Blue bag

• Cardboard and brown paper – Advent calendars, Christmas cards and gift tags can be placed in blue bags provided they are not shiny or glittery. 

The council’s recycling centres will be operating as normal for the majority of the festive period, but will be closed on:

• Christmas Day – Wednesday 25 December
• Boxing Day – Thursday 26 December
• New Year’s Day – Wednesday 1 January

There will be NO garden waste collections from Monday 9 December 2019 to Friday 17 January 2020 inclusive. Normal garden waste collections will start again on Monday 20 January.

People who have bought real Christmas trees can take them to the council’s recycling centres or put them out for collection between January 20 and 10 February on garden waste collections days (even if they don’t have a green bin) and the council will collect them free of charge.  Please cut them up small enough to fit in the lorry and ensure they are free of decorations.

Linley Close litter and rubbish update

As many of you will be aware, we have been dealing with the on-going issue of litter and rubbish in Linley Close.

We have been working closely with Curo and BANES to reach a solution to help keep this area clean and are pleased that they have now carried out works to help reduce this issue.

As you will see from these pictures, it is an improvement and hope that all residents will benefit from this.

We will, of course, continue to monitor the area and make sure this solution works for all.

Christmas and New year waste collections

Waste collections over the Christmas break: 

As we are now all in the fortnightly waste collections there may be confusion over when your waste will next be collected.

To make it easy for residents the council has published information on rubbish collections in your area over the Christmas break.

Linley Close

Due to a total lack of communication between BANES Council, Curo and Curo's management team Friday morning all the rubbish from the flats has been dragged out and left along the length of Linley Close leaving piles of black sacks to be attacked by birds.

Only one pile of rubbish along this road was cleared on Friday whilst the rest has now been ripped open by animals and birds.  Only one set of the flats that were cleared were actually due for weekly collection, therefore they should not have even been put out.

Add to this the lack of footpath maintenance and large piles of slippery leaves, this road is in urgently need of some attention.

We have asked that all the waste is cleared and that all these leaves and footpaths are cleaned up and made safe for all residents to use.

Waste & Recycling Alterations

This Monday, 6th November, is the start of the new Waste & Recycling changes brought in by the Council.

Please be aware your collection day is likely to have changed.  Make sure you read the leaflet that was delivered with your bin/bag as this contains important information about your collection.

The recycling will still be collected EVERY week, however, the day for this is likely to have changed, a lot of Twerton has been altered to now be collected on a FRIDAY not a Tuesday.

Your rubbish collection will be collected fortnightly and your garden waste is staying as fortnightly.  There is a calendar shown on the leaflet that you will have received.  This shows the weeks are split into green week and black week.  Green week will be the week your garden waste will be collected and black week is when your non-recyclable household rubbish will be collected.

After checking this information, we discovered that with this combination of changes there is going to be a 17 day wait for the first non-recyclable household rubbish collection for a number of households in the Twerton area.  We have been told by a Senior Waste Officer at the council, to accommodate this change they will be accepting additional black waste sacks put along side your new container for the first couple of collections. 

Your waste and recycling  bins/boxes/bags should be put outside your property by 7am on the day of collection, but should not be put out before 8pm the night before.  The council have said they may impose a £60 fine for anyone that is not complying with the guidelines they have provided within their leaflet, and no containers should obstruct footpaths.

Waste collections (Twerton)

Many residents have been asking us about the new waste collections in the Twerton area and is there a definitive map so after a bit of research here is the map that the council have published.

Extra recycling collections this Saturday, 4 July

Bath & North East Somerset Council is putting on extra recycling collections tomorrow (Saturday 4 July) as it catches up with delays to the service caused by the exceptional heat.

While the Council’s Waste Management Team works to return collections to normal, residents are requested to leave their recycling out and are being reassured it will be collected as soon as possible.

On Wednesday this week, the Council announced that circuit boards in the compactors of the waste collection trucks were overheating as a result of soaring temperatures on the hottest July day on record.  This resulted in a reduction in the number of vehicles available to the Waste Management Service.

Bath & North East Somerset Council responded quickly by hiring in extra vehicles and has made modifications to its fleet to counteract the impact of the high temperatures. As a result of this swift action, collection crews were able to catch up with the Wednesday backlog by the end of Thursday.

The crews are working hard to keep on top of the collections and are staying out on the roads until later today to ensure that all general waste is collected. They will also be making additional recycling collections on Saturday to ensure they are back on track. If your recycling has not yet been collected then please leave it out. Collections may be made earlier or later than usual.

Waste out on wrong days

We have had to report several households in the past few weeks for deliberately putting their waste out on the wrong days.

A particular problem last week was Kelston View and the properties have been reported to the council for investigation.

Putting waste out on the wrong day is not only dangerous as people could fall over it but it also gets scattered all over the roads meaning more expense for it to be cleared up.

Residents in Bath and North East Somerset are only permitted to place their waste out for collection from 8pm the evening before collection day. If waste is placed within the boundaries of private property it is the responsibility of the property owner.

Please help keep Twerton a cleaner place
