Rogue Charity Collectors

Please be aware there are a couple of people knocking on doors in the area, one male and one female claiming to be collecting cash on behalf of Genesis Trust.  They are wearing Genesis Trust T-shirts and have a green bucket with a piece of paper stuck to the bucket with Genesis Trust logo on.

We have had confirmation from Genesis Trust that they do not authorise anyone to do this type of collection on their behalf.

We would therefore recommend that you do not give any money to these people directly.

If you want to make a donation to any charity, please do contact the charity direct.

War Memorial - St Michael's Church

Councillor Tim Ball, local campaigner Sarah Moore and Focus team member Sean Moore joined other members of the local community to clean up the War Memorial down by St Michael's Church in Twerton this morning.

The memorial has not been cleaned for a considerable time and had become rather dirty. Whilst the majority of the grime has been removed, we will be looking at getting the cross cleaned further and also look at ensuring this is now maintained regularly.

Help for Twerton Community

Councillor Tim Ball has a small amount of money available this year to help promote community projects.

If you are part of an organisation that is looking to run a project then please get in touch as there may be a small amount of financial help available.

If you have an idea of an improvement that needs to be made that can not be funded in any other way then please let us know so that consideration can be given to see if it can be funded.

We want to see Twerton residents involved as much as possible in ideas of how to improve the area for the better.

Haycombe Cemetery & Crematorium entrance improvements

Work has started on a new project to improve the entrance gateway at Haycombe Cemetery & Crematorium.

At the moment the gateway can become congested as it is only wide enough for one car to pass through at a time. This can mean that funeral cortèges have to wait to wait outside on the road from exiting traffic to pass through the gates on to Whiteway Road.

The work will involve dismantling and relocating two of the stone pillars which have been in place since 1937, to widen the gateway.  Great care will be taken during this part of the job sot hat the pillars on both sides will match once it is finished.

New gates will be manufactured by a local fabricator modelled on the design of the existing gates and re-using parts of them where they can.

One of the pedestrian access routes will also change with a new gate off the Whiteway Road pavement leading on to a new pathway inside the boundary wall towards the Chapel and the rest of the grounds.

Single lane access will be maintained throughout the works and the Council’s contractors are making significant efforts to ensure inconvenience and noise is minimised at this sensitive location.

Works are scheduled to finish before Christmas.

Planning Application - The Hollow

Overlooking the field where approval to build 20 homes is being sought
The additional consultation period for the application to build 20 homes on the land adjacent to The Bath City Farm has now closed.

Over 290 objections have been received from residents around the area not wanting this project to go ahead.

The objections raised are for a large range of reasons, but the main reasons we can see are:

  • The dangers that result from having an additional road emerging onto The Hollow, whether with or without altered traffic calming, this area already has too much traffic travelling at too great a speed.
  • The loss of the already limited green space and beautiful hillside.
  • The negative impact on the surrounding residents and the Farm itself.

The decision is scheduled to be released at the end of November and we will of course let you know the outcome as soon as we hear. However, both myself and Councillor Tim Ball are supporting the residents with their objections to this application and hope the views of those that will be mostly affected by this development are listened to over those of a national developer.

Windrush Close

After a recent walk around in Windrush Close we were concerned to find that the footpaths have become very worn and in places were covered in a green moss.

We have asked Curo and the Council to inspect the footpaths to take the necessary action to remove the moss that is slippery when wet.

We have also asked that any repairs including resurfacing of the paths takes place as soon as possible.

Redland Park walk around

Sarah Moore & Councillor Ball by fly tipped sofa

Councillor Tim Ball and I went for a walk around Redland Park yesterday.

Unfortunately, the level of rubbish and fly tipping is not getting any better.

We have asked for the sofa that has been dumped to be removed as soon as possible.

We have also asked for the whole area to be cleared up.  Rubbish was left lying all around Redland Park and the grass has even been cut around some of the rubbish, which is totally unacceptable.

More rubbish around the area
We have also asked Curo to get the overgown bushes and the weeds cleared up across the area.

Councillor Tim Ball is also contacting Curo to arrange a more regular programme of works is put in place to get this area monitored and rubbish/weeds removed promptly.

If you are aware of fly tipping or rubbish in your area that is not being cleared, please do get in touch.

Shaws Way - Weeds and Rubbish

Sarah Moore next to bus stop on Shaws Way
Great walk around Twerton today with Councillor Tim Ball, shame about all the rubbish and weeds we came across.

I have requested a bin is put next to the bus stop on Shaw's Way to try and reduce the amount of litter that is constantly left on the grassed area near this bus stop.

I have also asked if the large amount of weeds that are on the steps that lead from Shaw's Way up to Sheridan Road are removed as when these get wet they are very slippery and make the steps quite hazardous.

Currys PC World Refurbishment

Following discussions with staff, we can confirm that Currys PC World at Weston Lock is currently closed and will be closed for approximately 2 weeks, whilst the refurbishment of Unit A is finished and stock is moved to enable Currys PC World to operate from this side of the site.

This will mean that Currys PC World will then vacate Unit B and this will be free for Marks & Spencers to complete their work to enable the new food store to be opened in this section of the building.

Quebec Twerton

We have reached agreement with Curo for the removal of a hedge opposite the football ground that has been a problem for residents.

We have also asked that the lights that are not working in the area are repaired as soon as possible.

We would hope that the lights would be repaired shortly and expect the hedge to be removed and the replacement fencing put in place in the next few weeks.

New Noise app launched by Council

We are pleased that with all the problems that Twerton residents have had over the years with noise being created by some unsociable residents that the council have launched a new app to help battle this problem that have plagued  many households.

Noise nuisance accounts for almost two thirds of complaints received by the Council’s Environmental Protection Team, but because it is often unpredictable and can happen at any time of the day or night it may be difficult for Environmental Health Officers to witness.

The online toolkit and app will help people to gather evidence, so that the Council can, hopefully, help those affected resolve the issue without the need for formal action.

The toolkit includes advice on the actions you can take whilst noise is happening and afterwards. Amongst the ‘tools’ supplied are log sheets, template letters and the Bath and North East Somerset noise app.

The free app can be downloaded to your smart phone, and can then be used as an electronic noise diary, recording short audio clips, with date, and time. This information is then sent to the Environmental Protection Team who can use it to help with their investigation.

There are a number of benefits in using the app over making traditional audio recordings:

• The app provides a GPS location to pinpoint where you are recording the noise from.
• It has easy to use icons to indicate the type of noise and which room you are in when being affected.
• It means you can take action as the nuisance is happening.
• The app acknowledges that your recording has been received.
• Ultimately, the app provides a whole package to enable you to communicate easily with the Council. There’s no need to write letters or email, the app does it all for you.

To view the toolkit and download the app visit:http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/services/environment/pollution-noise-nuisance/noise-toolkit

Road Safety - Poolemead Road/Sheridan Road

Following requests from residents earlier this year, it is great to see the white keep clear lines have now been painted on Poolemead Road/Sheridan Road.

The keep clear lines have been put on both sides of Poolemead Road from the Junction with Whiteway Road and also from the Junction of Sheridan Road along Poolemead Road towards the rear of the Southside Centre.

There have been a number of issues with cars, vans and even coaches parking in this area restricting traffic flow and making visibility and pedestrian safety a large concern for a number of residents.

We are hopeful this should now make the area safer for everyone, however, please do let us know if there are any continuing issues.

Street Cleansing

Twerton Focus Team member Sean Moore has started a campaign to get the streets across the city cleared of the ever increasing quantity of overgrown vegetation.  Sean has written to every Councillor in Bath and North East Somerset asking what they are each doing in their own wards to tackle this issue.

The overgrown vegetation, mainly weeds, is getting so out of hand across the whole council area that they are starting to cause damage to our footpaths and roads, which in turn uses up value revenue to repair, this revenue could be used elsewhere if a proper maintenance programme was in place.  The council does spray the weeds, however, these are then in turn left to rot down, providing more debris on the edge of footpaths and in gutters in which new weeds can grow.

We have gutters that are now green and drains that will be totally ineffective throughout the winter months due to the amount of grass and weeds that is growing in them.  The weeds not only cause damage but they make our streets look a mess and litter gets caught up in them making our streets look even worse.

The street cleansing teams are issued with brushes, shovels and even garden hoe's, however, these are rarely used, which is why the weeds have reached such levels.  Sean is asking for council employees to revert back to using the full range of equipment they are supplied with instead of just walking the streets with a bag and litter picker.  The use of the brushes and shovels means that the weeds have no debris left in the footpaths and gutters in which to grow

Here in Twerton we are aware of this issue affecting a large number of our roads and footpaths are are actively speaking with the council;s cleansing team to get this cleaned up.

If you have any particular issues in your street that you would like us to look into, please do get in touch.

Shaws Way - Traffic disruption 1st October

On Thursday 1st October Wessex Water will be carrying out essential work to replace covers on the section of Shaws Way, between it's junction with Newton Road and Cleeve Green.

This work is scheduled to be carried out between 9.30am and 3.00pm and is likely to cause disruption to all traffic, including busses, with potential partial or full road closure possible for some of the time.

If you will be travelling by bus, we would advise you check with the local bus companies if a planned diversion is in place or if they are continuing to run via this route during the road works.

The Twerton Morriosns is one of the 100 or so stores that is being transferred to a new company after Morrisions decided to reduce the amount of stores that it holds in the convenience store sector.

We have had complaints from residents about youths vandalising the Bus Shelter on Kelston View after school hours.

We have drawn this matter to the attention of the local Police and asked that they keep a close eye on the area.

Second hand furniture sale

Bath & North East Somerset Council is once again offering residents the opportunity to buy second hand furniture at bargain prices.

The unwanted furniture has been brought to the Council’s Recycling Centres, but is still in a good enough condition to be re-used.

Items will go on sale on Saturday September 26, from 10am to 12 noon at the old MOD building (next to the Recycling Centre) at Pixash Lane, Keynsham BS31 ITP.

The furniture available includes: a cast iron double bed, corner sofas, three-piece suites, bedside tables, retro sideboards and coffee tables, plus much, much more.

For the first time the Council’s Waste Campaign’s team are offering some of these items for free.

So whether you’re looking to furnish your home or want a piece of furniture to upcycle, come along and grab a bargain.

All furniture bought at the sale must be paid for in cash and taken away on the day.

Free electric blanket testing 2015

Residents across Bath & North East Somerset are being urged to book now for free electric blanket safety tests.

Bath & North East Somerset Council offers the service annually to help people protect themselves against an injury or fire in the home.

Electric blankets over three years old should be tested every year. All blankets should be tested if the wiring within them has moved or if the electrical connections look worn or damaged.

Last year, Bath & North East Somerset Council tested 177 electric blankets, of these 34 failed the test.  Electric blankets may often look safe but in fact pose a serious risk.  We want people to be safe in their homes and I urge anyone who uses an electric blanket to get it tested using our free service.

This year’s testing sessions will take place in Keynsham, Midsomer Norton & Larkhall. Booking an appointment is essential. In addition to the electric blanket testing there will be information stalls from a range of organisations to help residents keep safe, healthy and active.

Dates and times for 2015

Friday October 9 – 10.30am – 4pm at the Council Chamber, High Street, Midsomer Norton, BA3 2DP

Tuesday October 13 – 10.30am – 4pm, New Oriel Hall, Larkhall, BA1 6RA

Tuesday October 27 – 11am – 4.30pm, St John’s Church Hall, Keynsham High Street, BS31 2BL

To book an appointment, call Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Public Protection & Health Improvement team on 01225 396759

Sheridan Road

Had a good meeting with Curo today to look at proposals to resolve some of the difficult parking problems on Sheridan Road.

Residents are well aware that parking on this road is difficult to say the very least and that much of the grass area has been parked on and destroyed by some people parking irresponsibly.

We are determined to resolve these issues as soon as practicably possible and believe that only a joint approach with residents support will work.

Proposals for former toilets Twerton

We have been made aware of a planning application for the former toilet block at Dominion Road that was sold at auction last year.

The communication that we have had form the planning agent is an application has been submitted for the erection of one bed roomed dwelling on the site.

Residents will of course be kept informed of the proposals as soon as we have them and we will publish them on line for you to read.

The application is of course in its early stages and there will be plenty of time for residents to make comments.

Beware of bogus calls about Council Tax

Bath & North East Somerset Council is warning residents to be wary after reports of bogus calls being made to households in the area about Council Tax.

The caller states that they are from a company which, for a fee, can arrange to reduce the household’s Council Tax for them by having their current band reviewed.

The company involved has no connection to Bath & North East Somerset Council and is not contacting households on our behalf.

We would advise anyone who receives a call from someone claiming to be working on behalf of the Council to reduce Council Tax charges and asking for a fee, to end the call straightaway. Anyone affected by bogus cold callers should contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service helpline on 03454 04 05 06. If you are concerned that you may have compromised the safety of your bank details, you should contact your bank immediately.

If you think that your property might be in the wrong Council Tax band, you can ask the Valuation Office Agency to review it for you. This service is free. You do not have to pay to have your Council Tax band reviewed.

Information about making an appeal against your banding is available on the GOV.UK website (https://www.gov.uk/council-tax-appeals/challenge-your-band), or you can contact the local Valuation Office Agency for advice - phone: 0300 050151 / email: ctwest@voa.gsi.gov.uk.

Make sure that you are entitled to vote

Households in Bath and North East Somerset will have received a form this week, asking residents to check that the information that appears on the electoral register about those living at their address is correct.

This is part of Bath & North East Somerset Council’s annual voter registration canvass. The aim is to ensure that the electoral register is up-to-date and identify and encourage any residents who are not registered to do so.

With Police and Crime Commissioner elections taking place across the Avon & Somerset Police Area in May 2016, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure that they are registered to vote.

“If you’re not currently registered, the council will send you information explaining how to do this or you can apply online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.”

It’s particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form and checks whether they are registered.

Research by the independent Electoral Commission indicates that across Great Britain recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time. The research showed that 94% of people who have been at their property for more than 16 years will be registered compared to 40% of people who have lived at an address for less than one year.

The same research indicates that whilst almost 95% of outright home owners are registered, this is the case for only 63% of private renters.

Any residents who have questions can contact Electoral Services either by phone on 01225 477333 or email elections@bathnes.gov.uk

Nigel Penny moves on

Nigel Penny left with Tim Ball and PC Adge Secker
We would like to say a special that you to PCSO Nigel Penny for all the work that he carried out in the Twerton area over the years that he has been with us.

Nigel will be remember very fondly by Twerton residents for his constant smile and helpful friendly nature whilst carrying out his duties working alongside beat Manager Adge Secker.

Nigel always went that little bit further and as a dedicated fisherman he organised fishing trips in his own time for some of Twerton's youth.

It is our understanding that Nigel has taken on a new area in Radstock and we wish him well in his new duties.

Shaws Way

Please remember that Shaws Way is closed tomorrow 23rd July for essential repairs to the road surface, the condition of which has become very bad.

We are pleased that this work, that we requested earlier this year, is now being carried out  .

Poolemead Road

We are pleased that the dangerous section of footpath on Poolemead road by the Centurion that we highlighted some time ago has been repaired.

We are still however reminding the council that other areas that we have reported are still waiting to be done.

Pennyquick View

After a walk around with Curo on Monday we noticed this overgrown area alongside the fields with brambles and weeds that are out of control.

We have asked that the council cut this area back as it is not only unsightly it is also quite dangerous for people with visual impairments that would not see the brambles.

We would hope that the council would sort this out quickly.

Redland Park

We have asked that the paving area behind 161 Redland Park is repaired as soon as possible.

This matter has been going on for some time now with both the Council and Curo blaming each other for the work not being completed.

We have asked that both the council and Curo resolve this matter and get these essential repairs done as soon as possible.

As you can see the blocks have been placed in a tidy pile.

Fake Window Cleaner Warning

An article has been put onto the Bath Chronicle website today warning residents of a man claiming to be a Window Cleaner that is operating in the Twerton area and  trying to trick older residents out of money.

He claims to be employed by the Bath Chronicle and he was collecting money for cleaning their windows over the past 6 months, although this had not happened.

The full article can be found here.

Whiteway Road Pennyquick Hill

Councillor Tim Ball asked several question at the new Conservative cabinet meeting last week with regards to the safety of this road.

Tim also made several suggestions to make the road safer that have received a rather uncommitted reply.

We will continue to pursue these issues.

M

Question from:
Councillor Tim Ball
Due to the dangerous nature of the Whiteway Road particularly the more commonly known section of Pennyquick Hill in Twerton Ward, And the amount of accidents that have taken place on this road over the years.

1) Will the cabinet member for transport reconsider the speed limit on this road to ensure that it is correct?

2) Consider enforcement of the current or reconsidered speed limit?

3) Give active consideration to colouring the road surface red form its Poolmead Road Junction to the Junction with Newton Road as has been done with other roads in the district to give warning to motorists that this is a dangerous road if you speed or overtake?
Answer from:
Councillor Anthony Clarke
1) There is no proposal to review the speed limit on Whiteway Road/Pennyquick Hill in the current approved programme of schemes

2) I have asked officers to review the accident records for the locations and advise whether the accident history justifies reconsideration of the speed limit.

3) There is no proposal to introduce coloured surfacing at Poolmead Road junction with Newton Road.  Coloured surfacing will be introduced only if the officer’s evidence indicates there is need for some form of Traffic Management work required at this junction.
